Dark woods or dark colors are best only truly if you have other dark furniture in the same finish & have a huge bedroom & naturally whites & neutrals customarily work fine, as they're subtle. If you won't be in the property for too much time, or if you're leasing the property out you may not need ( or need ) to think too hard and long about the long run implications of your choosing.
Naturally flat-pack wardrobes will always be the least expensive option, but they are never going to be as sturdy as professionally assembled or hand-made designs, so in two years time you may be replacing it all. When buying wardrobes look at the standard of the hinges and how well they are attached, & the drawer mechanisms - if they are tough in the store they will be difficult in some years' time at home.
The highest quality wadrobes are made in Europe ( Italy or Germany appear to have the monopoly ) & often wanted to be ordered to your wants. Gloss & matt lacquers in nearly any color, strange textures & patterns ( doors in fake crocodile look superb, accept it or not). You will not truly get the choice of doors as the makers of fitted wardrobes don't make other furniture you can 'borrow' designs & finishes from.

Having a reasonably set range of door options is the sole way a fitted wardrobe maker can be reasonable, and flexibility not design is their robust point, except for truly ungainly spaces they might be your only course.
These are usually the least expensive option, & if what you see is what you need & need then they can be perfect. Color ranges and options for types of finish are less sundry, and dimensions are fixed. Typically a selection of matching bedroom cupboards and chests will be available to enhance such sorts of wardrobe. Both hinged and sliding doors are offered, a much wider choice of colours and finishes, lacquers, wood and glass. Element units are made to standard sizes, but units of different sizes can be mixed to make a complete massive wardrobe. A large range of internal accessories are available, like pull-out trouser and shoe racks, drawer units, additional shelves and hanging rails. Helpful internal lighting can be fitted, with sensors to mechanically light the wardrobe when the door is opened.
If you're looking for something to fit your wants instead of merely a universal wardrobe a customized freestanding wardrobe will give you the style, size & features you'll need, without compromising on quality. If you can afford a freestanding customized wardrobe then you'll finish up with something attractive & practical, if not then you'll need to do your homework to find something acceptable.
